New Renault 5 Prototype

The cult classic Renault 5 supermini gets reinvented into a modern icon

The cult classic Renault 5 supermini gets reinvented into a modern icon.

Introducing the Renault 5 Prototype, a reinvention of the classic Renault 5 icon. Taking the same cheeky, playful character and bringing it up-to-date, the new Renault 5 Prototype is everything that made the original unique, adapted for the 21st century.

With the ‘winking headlight’ design of the original, prominent Renault insignia on the grille and an iconic, edgy body, the Renault 5 Prototype is instantly recognisable. Much like the Renault Twingo that was reimagined and brought up to date, the new Renault 5 Prototype is a modern twist on an iconic design, resulting in a retro look and feel that so many drivers love.

The Renault 5 Prototype

A cult car from the 70's with winking headlights, does that mean anything to you? The R5 of course! Its mischievous look is part of our heritage and the Renault 5 prototype unveiled in January cannot deny its ancestor. Nicolas Jardin, the prototype's exterior designer, tells us how he reinterpreted the famous look of the original Renault 5 in a modern way.

Treated to some cutting-edge technology, this latest interpretation has been designed with distinctive LED matrix lighting that brings the road to life. When unlocked, a welcome sequence is performed – the Renault logo illuminates and the headlights animate as if the car is waking up.

Predecessor to the modern classic Renault Clio, the Renault 5 was introduced in 1972 and became an instant icon, thanks to its quirky, angular body and fun-to-drive personality. The Renault 5 was in production for 24 years, spanning two generations and a number of sporty versions including:

• Renault 5 Alpine/Gordini • Renault 5 Alpine/Gordini Turbo • Renault 5 Turbo • Renault 5 GT Turbo

To name but a few!

1985 saw a mid-life refresh of the Renault 5 with modest styling tweaks but the same cheeky look that can easily be seen in the modern prototype.
