New Kia Picanto Wave

Stunning styling

The exterior styling of the Picanto already ticks the majority of supermini boxes, and the Picanto Wave takes a number of unique and existing elements and brings them together in an incredibly appealing package. Only 10 percent of buyers in this segment choose three-door cars when they're available, which is why Kia went down the five-door only route with the Picanto and this new special edition is no exception, despite its subtly sporty styling.

As far as those sporty styling elements go, the Picanto Wave builds on the specification of the Picanto ‘2’ by adding:

  • 15-inch alloys instead of 14-inch wheels
  • Rear privacy glass
  • Satin chrome interior door handles
  • White accents on the door armrest, lower centre console trim and air vents
  • Celestial Blue premium exterior colour unique to the Wave Special Edition

It all brings about a youthful feel to the Picanto, but not so much so that it would alienate any older buyers who might be attracted to the Kia supermini.

One of the most obvious aspects of the exterior design of the Picanto is its tall stance, which as well as helping create an appealing outline also plays an important role in providing plenty of interior space for the driver and passengers.

Of course, a lot of what's already so good about the way the Picanto ‘2’ looks carries over into the Wave. That means body-coloured exterior door handles and mirrors and a black radiator grille with chrome surround are still in evidence, which work together with the Wave's additional styling cues to deliver an extremely attractive slant to Kia's most compact car.

New Kia Picanto Wave

Substance as well as style

With so much focus these days on relatively large vehicles, especially SUVs, it's easy to forget just how much fun small cars can be to drive. Getting behind the wheel of the 2019 Kia Picanto Wave will certainly jog the memory in that direction as this latest version of the Picanto is a lot of fun to drive, and you certainly don’t have to be a racing driver to appreciate the great way this car drives and handles.

Even though the Wave comes with the most economical engine in the 2019 Picanto lineup, the compact proportions and light weight of the car mean its 1.0-litre, three-cylinder MPi engine is livelier than some might expect for a 66bhp unit. This engine delivers all the performance the Picanto Wave needs for those day-to-day duties, but it's not to be found lacking when a little fun and entertainment is the order of the day either. The Picanto is a front-wheel drive model, and the five-speed manual gearbox adds to the fun of driving, as well as helping that all-important fuel economy.

For a car of its size, the Picanto Wave is surprisingly surefooted and the driving experience is one of a car that's decidedly agile and composed. While a number of today's superminis can often have a somewhat vague character to the way they steer, that's not the case here. There's a good level of feel delivered to the driver through the steering wheel, which definitely instils confidence and allows the Picanto to be planted exactly where the driver wants it.

Technologically advanced

It doesn’t matter how small or large a new car is these days, when it comes to technology and features, there's a certain level buyers expect from a new car. The Kia Picanto Wave doesn’t just meet those expectations; it exceeds them. As well as all the essentials we expect, such as central locking, air conditioning and electric windows front and rear, the Picanto Wave includes some features and technology that put some larger and more expensive rivals to shame.

Some of the impressive tech and features that come standard with the Wave include:

  • Six-speaker audio system
  • 7-inch touchscreen display
  • DAB digital radio
  • Bluetooth connectivity and audio streaming
  • Reversing camera with dynamic guidelines
  • Wireless mobile phone charger
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto compatibility with voice control

Safety as standard

It's impossible to overlook how Kia's industry-leading warranty puts the competition to shame, but it's also helped the brand cement an impressive reputation for its reliability and safety. A lot of work has been put into the Picanto by Kia to make sure this is easily the safest version of the supermini it's ever produced.
