Previously a quite serious off-roader, the Nissan X-Trail is now softer and more sophisticated, less rugged, but more family friendly than its predecessors. 
The X-Trail shares the same platform as the Nissan Qashqai so there are quite a few similarities. It’s both higher and longer than the Qashqai, with an optional third row of seats for the bigger families out there (with a free upgrade now available to a 7 seat model – *Offer available on Accenta models and higher until 30 June). With the addition of four-wheel-drive, you get a full-size, family-orientated SUV which performs perfectly off road. The previous Nissan X-Trail has been knocked out of the water by this latest one. Over 20,000 are now sold annually in the UK alone. Alongside the 128bhp 1.6-litre dCI diesel and 161bhp 1.6-litre DIG-T petrol engines, a new 175bhp 2.0 litre dCi has been introduced to the range, giving you more power and more toque, which means more acceleration. It’s available with two or four-wheel drive and manual or CVT automatic transmissions. Meaning, for the first time since the Nissan X-Trail was introduced in the year 2000, you can purchase a 4WD auto X-Trail, perfect for caravans and horse-towers. 
The Nissan X-Trail comes with an advanced system, known as Nissan Safety Shield Technologies, to provide a comprehensive approach to safety whilst driving the car. The safety system includes: traffic sign recognition, driver drowsiness alerts, blind spot and lane departure warnings and emergency braking assist feature amongst other features. With higher spec models, the Nissan X-Trail can have a multitude of cameras and parking assist systems added too. Due to the sheer amount of safety features, the X-Trail has been awarded a 5 star Euro NCAP rating, meaning it is one of the safest SUV’s on the road today. Internally, Nissan have made a lot of improvements too. The plastics and what some described as a “boring dash…” have gone, and been replaced with a more inviting cabin. The higher spec models are fitted with a range of fantastic extras, including the optional extra of a touchscreen with Google connectivity. The materials and switches were noted as feeling “slick and dependable” by Top Gear Magazine. 
All-told, the latest Nissan X-Trail has seen some fantastic improvements from its predecessor which have propelled it to be a serious contender in its class.
