A lot has changed since 1962, the year the CLZ7, Honda’s very first street scrambler, was unleashed. Six decades later, roads are so much busier – but thanks to the Japanese bikemaker’s ceaseless innovation, the CL500 is more than capable of keeping up.
This superb all-rounder handles ordered urban environments and ungovernable dirt trails with equal aplomb – and it’s ready to be modified and personalised just the way you want. What’s more, if you’re an A2 licence holder, there’s no need for conversion – make no mistake, however, the Honda CL500 packs a twin-cylinder punch that perfectly complements its stripped-down appearance.
21st-century retro
This bareboned beauty bears all the hallmarks of its 60s and 70s forebears, boasting a smoothly expansive and eye-catchingly coloured 12-litre fuel tank, for instance. By contrast, the bike’s frame, suspension and engine are provided with pitch-dark tones that contribute towards the CL500’s appealingly minimalist aesthetics. At the front, handlebars spread high and wide, while fork legs protrude from rubber gaiters, providing further echoes of the CLZ7. None of this is just for show, however. Both offer exceptional control: 41-millimetre telescopic front forks deliver 150-millimetre travel, while sweeping handlebars provide the rider with full reign. Other head-turning features include a twin-tail pipe exhaust (with high-level muffler) and a drilled stainless steel heat shield.

Potency and efficiency combined
A characterful liquid-cooled DOHC four-stroke four-valve 471cc engine delivers a peak 46.6bhp at 8,500rpm and a maximum 43.3Nm of torque at 6,000rpm. Mated to six-speed manual transmission, this twin-cylinder powerplant offers a top speed of 105.6mph – and returns more than 78mpg while producing CO2 emissions from just 86g/km. In short, the CL500 offers plenty of bite while remaining very affordable to run. Moreover, it manages as much as 206 miles on its full 12-litre fuel tank. This is a bike that provides plenty of dynamism, which occurs more through rev range than it does via sheer power and torque. At any speed, it’s easy to use, but whenever you require optimal acceleration, it’s more than able to deliver.
