The Honda CBR650R is the bike of choice for those motorcyclists who desire two-wheel potency and flair on public roads. This CBR looks the real deal – indeed, it is the real deal, one that offers more riding room and greater comfort than a pure racer. Nevertheless, it’s more than capable of holding its own on the track. Think of it more as a sports tourer than simply a sports-focused racer.
Even on relatively close inspection, the CBR650R has the appearance of the Fireblade, and the comparison is apt since it’s capable of a maximum 138mph. Certainly, this is a bike which is designed as much for taking part in competition as it is for riding on city streets, country lanes and motorways.
Head-turning design
The Honda CBR650R doesn’t just ride well, it looks great. It’s a lean, mean racing machine and anyone with any kind of sports-bike inclinations will do well to resist the temptation to ride it without asking permission first. Aerodynamic, agile and aggressively styled, the bike is fitted with dual LED headlights and brand-new reflectors – and handlebars that clip below the top yoke, thus providing the rider with fuller control. A standard-issue Grand Prix livery presents the bike in great swathes of scarlet, offset by black and with slivers of gold. If you fancy something a little more classical, there’s Matte Gunpowder Black Metallic, a pitch-dark colour scheme with silver relief. Honda is renowned for the build quality of its motorcycles and the CBR650R is no exception, with reliability and durability important factors that have helped govern the bike’s design.

Performance
If you demand a race-ready bike that offers bullish public-road performance, the CBR650R is an excellent solution. Powered by a liquid-cooled, 16-valve, free-spinning inline four-cylinder 649cc engine, the CBR650R outputs 93.9bhp and a maximum torque of 63Nm at 12,000rpm. This enables a top speed of 135mph while returning up to 47mpg and producing CO2 emissions as low as 113g/km (indeed, the bike is fully Euro5 compliant). The CBR650R offers plenty of midrange pep and noteworthy acceleration while delivering a smooth and appealing riding experience. With a full tank, it’s capable of travelling 195 miles between top-ups – and if you’re an A2 licence-holder, the bike can easily be converted to deliver a 47.6bhp output.
