Although a highly competitive sector, the new Nissan Navara has come out on top in the pick-up category in the 2017 WhatVan? Awards. Positioning against some big rivals such as the Mitsubishi L200, the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok, WhatVan? awarded best pick-up to the Nissan Navara for upgrades in styling, engineering, fuel efficiency and technology to name a few. It’s still a tough pick-up, but a lot more sophisticated than others in its class.

Nissan Navara

Available as a King Cab (two doors) or a Double Cab (four doors), the all-new Nissan Navara has it all; a powerful and efficient engine, a strong chassis and an interior that offers the comfort and innovative technology seen on Nissan’s Crossover range. One of the biggest changes is under the bonnet, where the old 2.5 litre diesel engine has been replaced with a 2.3 dCI diesel that’s also found in the NV400 large van. You can opt for either a Single Turbo 160bhp or Twin Turbo 190bhp engine, with the more powerful option being the first twin-turbo engine to have been used in a light commercial vehicle. You can get the Nissan Navara in both 2WD and 4WD variants, with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission engine. Both help the Nissan Navara to pack a punchy performance which allows it to carry a heavy pay load with superb fuel economy.

The Navara (Double Cab) has multi-link rear suspension, more like a Nissan X-trail or Qashqai. Most pick-ups have beefy but unsophisticated leaf spring rear suspension to cope with heavy loads, whereas the Nissan Navara’s five-link rear suspension has been successfully introduced to eradicate the bump and bounce usually associated with travelling in a pick-up. A big step forward in drive comfort within its class. It is much more advanced than traditional leaf-springs and brings improvements in ride-comfort, payload and handling, transforming the vehicle from a working tool to a flexible multi-purpose vehicle. When it comes to fuel economy, the Navara’s performance has been dramatically improved. Mitsubishi’s claim, with the L200, to be the greenest pick-up of the bunch has been short-lived. The previous Navara achieved 33.6mpg on the combined cycle, the new Nissan Navara boasts an official 44.1mpg compared with the L200’s 42.8mpg.

Let’s move on to safety. Safety standards of some pick-ups are disappointing as detailed in their analysis from the experts at Euro NCAP. However, the Nissan Navara has a suite of advanced systems that make up Nissan Safety Shield technologies that provide a comprehensive approach to safety. The technology will keep an eye on your all-new Navara, help you handle unexpected situations and reduce the risk of injury if you have a collision*. Together, with a strong test crash performance, ensured the Navara was awarded a 4 star Euro NCAP rating. Now you can see why the Nissan Navara was awarded Best Pick-Up at the 2017 WhatVan? Awards.
