What does this light mean?

Finding your way around the dashboard can be difficult, but what's even harder is translating those lights that pop up! So we're going to help you...

This light can be known by a few names - Brake warning light, brake system warning light, parking brake warning light or brake fluid warning light. This sign should only be lit up when you have your parking brake activated. If it does come up whilst you are driving it could be an indication that your brake fluids are running low, or even worse, that your brake system could be broken. For the latter, a Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) warning light may also appear.

This is the anti-lock braking system(ABS) warning light. The function of the ABS is to prevent your wheels from locking and controls your brake pressure. If this light pops up, it is usually safe to continue your journey, aslong as there are noises coming from your wheels, but you need to be more mindful of what's around you and keeping more distance between yourself and others. If the light is on your cars breaking distance may be increased.

This is a coolant warning light. This usually indicates when the level of the coolant within your car is running low. The function of coolant is to to absorb heat that comes from your engine to prevents your car from overheating. If the coolant is not at an appropriate level your car will overheat, which could cause serious damage. You can still drive with this light on, but avoid long journeys.

This is the oil warning light. The reason that this light can come on is because the oil may have become too hot, or the oil pressure or level could be too low. The function of oil within your car is to ensure that the engine is lubricated, if it is not doing this efficiently, the damage it creates could be very expensive, or irrepairable, so if this light comes on, act quick. Definitely do not make ANY journeys whilst this light is on.

This is the airbag warning light, or supplemental restraint system (SRS). If this pops up on your dashboard, it could mean that there is a fault in your airbag safety system. If the light comes on, we wouldn't advise making any journeys, as if you get into a crash you may not be protected by your airbags.
