It's official, Nissan’s Sunderland Plant will be remaining with us in the UK - Nissan plans to turn its Sunderland factory into one of the biggest car plants in the world, producing two new models. Nissan will produce the next Qashqai and the next X-Trail model at its Sunderland Plant. This will be the first time the X-Trail will be made outside Japan. Nissan plans to develop Sunderland into a “super plant” that will build more than 600,000 cars a year.

Nissan will produce the next Qashqai and the next X-Trail model at its Sunderland Plant.

Nissan will increase its investment in Sunderland, securing and sustaining the jobs of more than 7,000 workers at the plant and delivers what will be perceived as a major boost to the economy.  In addition to the 7,000 direct employees at Sunderland, the plant supports a further 28,000 British automotive supply chain jobs.

Nissan’s Sunderland plant opened in 1986 and has produced almost 9 million cars since. One in three British cars are produced in Sunderland, which is the UK’s largest car plant of all time, where Nissan has invested more than £3.7bn since it opened the factory. In addition, 80% of production from Sunderland is exported to over 130 international markets. More than 2 million Qashqai’s have been built in Sunderland in less than 10 years. “This is great news for the UK but also fantastic news for Nissan. The Sunderland plant is Britain's biggest car plant with 475,000 vehicles produced last year.
