Type R BBC Top Gear Awards

Claiming the awards for Hot Hatch of the Year and International Editors' Car of the Year accolades would have been enough to get the champagne corks popping for most cars, but the Honda Civic Type R isn’t most cars. After scooping those two prestigious accolades, it shouldn't have been too much of a shock as the Civic Type R was then also named as the overall Car of the Year.

Every year, readers look forward to the special awards issue of BBC TopGear Magazine as a prestigious annual celebration of that year's best cars. As TopGear is now the world’s largest monthly car magazine, it was only right for the awards to go truly global this year. That meant the editors of all 22 of its international editions were canvassed to vote for their favourite cars of the year.

The awards are not alone in going global this year either, as the Type R itself has followed a similar path by now been officially offered for sale in the USA for the first time ever in 2017.

With a 2.0-litre VTEC TURBO engine under the bonnet that's been optimised and refined to develop 320 PS with peak torque of 400 Nm, the Civic Type R has a top speed of 169 mph and can reach 60 mph from a standing start in as little as 5.7 seconds.
