Dangers of part worn tyres.
Part Worn Tyres
Something we often take for granted is the treat depth on our tyres. Do you know what the legal thread depth for your vehicle’s tyres are?
If not, you could be putting yourself at risk of up to a £10,000 fine and 12 points on your driver’s license.
Latest data provided by Halfords suggests four million cars are being driven with bald tyres, with 13 percent of motorists admitting to knowing their vehicle’s tyre is below the legal treat depth.
The legal thread depth of a car’s tyres should be 1.66mm over at least ¾ of the tyre. There is a growing trend in illegal tyres being sold by ‘irresponsible businesses’, where the second-hand or part worn tyres are being sold with some serious safety defects.
Effects of driving with Part Worn Tyres:
If you are caught with tyres that don’t meet the legal requirements you will face a £2,500 fine and three points on your licence, that is per tyre, so if all four of your tyres don’t meet the legal requirements that would cost you £10,000 and 12 points on your licence.
Tyres which don’t meet the legal requirement increase the stopping distance and breaking time significantly, whilst compromising the vehicle’s steering in bad weather – putting yourself, other vehicles and pedestrians at risk.
Facts show that in 2017, 17 people were killed and 719 road casualties accrued due to faulty and illegal tyres – deaths which are avoidable and should not be happening as often or at all.
If your vehicle needs new tyres make sure you are buying from a responsible, trusted business, it could save you time, money and a potential accident. New Tyres are now available to suit all budgets and provide a safer option and value for money.
