Driving in harmony

The Kia Niro plug-in hybrid features an advanced high-capacity 8.9 kWh battery pack that powers a 44.5kWh electric motor, which is 40% more powerful than the standard Niro model’s. Paired with the 1.6-litre four-cylinder GDI engine and six-speed double-clutch transmission, it accelerates the Plug-in Hybrid Niro from 0-62mph in 10.8-seconds – 0.7 seconds quicker than standard – for a seamless and responsive drive. The changes made to the Kia Niro’s electric drive system benefit the environment too, with emissions dropping to less than 30g/km CO2 on the combined cycle, and falling to zero during electric-only operation.

Efficiency is enhanced with regenerative braking technology that returns kinetic energy to recharge the battery pack while coasting or braking. It works in unison with a new Eco Driving Assistant System (Eco DAS), which informs drivers how to drive more efficiently during the current road conditions. As part of the system, Coasting Guide Control notifies the driver when to lift off the accelerator and coast towards junctions, while PEC uses the navigation and cruise control systems to anticipate landscape changes such as inclines and bends and determine when best to recharge or use the power from the battery pack.

A versatile approach to hybrid drive

The Kia Niro was designed to deliver the best of both worlds from the very start. As well as being capable of eco-friendly driving and low running costs, it has SUV versatility at its heart. With all the hybrid technology located beneath the floor of the 324-litre boot and the rear seat bench, the Niro Plug-in Hybrid offers greater practicality than any other plug-in hybrid in the same class. There is even space for a dedicated storage area beneath the boot floor for the Niro Plug-in Hybrid's charging cable, when it’s not being used.
