Making the Geneva Motor Show indispensable in 2017, the all-new Honda Civic Type R has been revealed.
Smooth, athletic and muscular, it’s shaped for one thing: performance. In fact, Honda has dedicated its design and engineering team to producing the most rewarding drive available from any hot hatch. Packing an engine geared for performance
The all-new Honda Civic Type R comes with a revised version of the 2.0-litre VTEC TURBO, which brought drivers so much driving excitement in the previous generation Type R. Building on the credentials of its multi-award-winning predecessor, the all-new Type R comes with a power unit that has been substantially refined and optimised to produce even more power, 320PS with peak torque of up to 400Nm. In addition, the optimisation of the engine control settings means that the 2017 Type R benefits from improved driveability and throttle response. In such a power-packed hot hatch, driver connection is key, and the new Type R comes with an extremely smooth, precise, six-speed manual transmission with a rev match control system. Such is the confidence of Honda in the all-new Type R that there will be an attempt on the lap record for a front-wheel-drive production car at the Nürburgring.
Type R chassis and suspension
The new Honda Civic platform was designed from the outset with the Type R in mind. The new Civic bodyshell is lighter and more rigid. Indeed, torsional rigidity of the all-new type R is 38% higher than that of its predecessor, thanks in part to the increased use of adhesives. The standard new Civic Hatchback comes with Macpherson strut suspension at the front. For the new Type R, the system has been enhanced to maximise sporty handling, whilst minimising torque steer. At the rear, high rigidity suspension arms have been added.
A principal theme for the designers was improving comfort in the all-new Honda Civic Type R, without reducing its sporty appeal. The Type R comes with the ability to choose the driving mode you want for any journey. The previous model offered Sport mode for agility and +R mode for use on track. The 2017 Type R also comes with a Comfort driving mode for when you want to enjoy a more relaxed drive. The driving mode controls allow you to access pre-defined settings for the throttle response, the adaptive dampers, the feeling of the gear shift and the steering force.
Aerodynamics and stability
The Honda Civic Type R 2017 looks muscular and aggressive at rest, but it also boasts a best-in-class combination of drag and lift, leading to major improvements in stability at high speeds. The aerodynamic enhancements on the Type R include a front air curtain, a smoother underbody and a lightweight rear wing, as well as vortex generators at the trailing edge of the roof line.
