Honda Civic Type R 2017 Engines

From race to road

The 2.0-litre VTEC TURBO engine has been optimised and refined for the all-new Civic Type R, to provide an exhilarating driving experience that is pure race car for the road. It now produces 320ps and 400Nm of torque, while the throttle response is faster and the drivability better, meaning an engine that is sharper yet smoother. Only Honda is able to achieve these kinds of results, using its motor racing experience and high-performance engine-building expertise to build the best engines in the world.

The six-speed manual transmission is enhanced by a rev-match control system, ensuring better control of the Type R’s power while retaining the intimate, rewarding connection between driver and car. The result is the fastest front-wheel-drive production car around the legendary Nürburgring circuit in Germany, with a sensational lap time of 7 minutes and 43.8 seconds – over three seconds quicker than the previous record.

  • 320ps maximum power and 400Nm peak torque
  • Sharper throttle response and better drivability
  • Six-speed manual transmission with rev-match control system
  • Nürburgring front-wheel-drive production car lap record

Honda Civic Type R 2017 Chassis

Refined for the racetrack

Based on the lighter, more rigid body shell of the new Civic hatchback, the Type R takes things further by adding more adhesive in key areas – the result is torsional rigidity increased by 38% over the old Type R. The front Macpherson strut suspension of the standard hatchback is improved and uprated, using revised geometry that minimises torque steer and maximises agility, feedback and control, while the independent multi-link system of the new Civic is upgraded with the use of unique high-rigidity suspension arms. Sharper, harder and more composed, the Type R will perform flawlessly on any road and on every racetrack.

Aerodynamics Enhanced

The new Civic Type R has an aerodynamic package that has been shaped by years of experience on the racetrack as well as in the wind tunnel. Improvements over the previous version include a smoother underbody, a new front air curtain, a remodelled lightweight rear wing and vortex generators on the trailing edge of the roofline. As a result, the new Civic Type R boasts a best-in-class balance between lift and drag, contributing to greater high-speed stability.

Honda Civic Type R 2017 Design

Configurable for comfort or competition

Reconfigured driving modes give the Civic Type R greater usability than ever before. A new Comfort setting joins the Sport and track-focused +R modes, with each mode adjusting the settings for the adaptive dampers, steering weight, gear-shift feel and throttle response on demand. It means the new Type R is more comfortable and easier to manage when needed, yet also able to deliver an intensified driving experience with even more performance at just the touch of a button.
